La Corona

About Miguel Maltos Gonzales

La Corona, the crown, is my gallery of Chicano artwork.

The mixture of two mediums is symbolic of my bicultural upbringing in San Antonio, TX.

By combining the two mediums of photography and illustration, I create my bicultural art. Composing photographs with the intention to draw on them starts before you click the shutter. I draw my family and friends in a simple, colorful, yet minimal style upon the realistic scenery. This depicts how Chicanos may not be seem as real people, but an illusion. The sunbeams are symbolic of my heritage dating back to pre-colonization. Huitzilopochtli was the God of the Mexicas, also known as the Aztecs. Huitzilopochtli was in a constant struggle with the darkness. I incorporate the Huitzilopochtli , or the sun to represent the silent struggle bilingual people have in monolingual cultures. The challenge is as bright as day, but never seen.

These are my thoughts in a bilingual mind being made as a visual artwork.
